Menopause

Menopause signals the time in a woman’s life when ovulation ceases.  It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although the age of onset can vary greatly.

For some women, the symptoms of hot flushes, night sweating, mood swings and depression are minimal, for others these symptoms can be almost unbearable.

The low oestrogen levels that result after menopause significantly increase the risks of osteoporosis.  HRT can counteract many of the symptoms and lessen the risk of osteoporosis.  However, HRT does not suit all women and alternative treatments are available.  It is important for menopausal women to seek professional advice for the treatment which will suit them best.

Sound nutrition is essential with the emphasis on adequate calcium and iron.  The phytoestrogens found in many plant foods (such as soya) may help reduce the symptoms.  Exercise, keeping busy and continuing to learn, grow and developing new interests, are all beneficial in handling this phase in a woman’s life.
